Stop Trying to Work Harder

If you’re an entrepreneur, you probably follow a number of blogs, Twitter feeds, Instagram accounts, and the like that offer up “advice”.  Many of these accounts post the same tired phrases all the time like “While you’re watching empire, I’m building an empire!” or “Cut the TV from your daily activities and get 10x more done!” or something similarly designed to inspire but really offers no words of wisdom or applicable steps that can help you accomplish your goals.

This post is not about that.

Dream, Meditate, Create

Getting more done and being productive are not the same thing.  Working harder and getting ahead are not the same thing.  Working long hours and being successful are not the same thing.  If you want to get more done, be more productive, and see success, then pay attention.  Here is the secret.

First: Make a Plan for Your Week

checklist-41335_1280I’m all about planning.  I have a strict plan that dictates what hour of each day is dedicated to each task.  That plan is constantly changing depending on if new clients come on board, or if I find that I’m not getting everything done in the hour block that I have dedicated to that particular task.

Making a plan is important, and it will help keep you on track to meet your goals.  But the plan is just one way that you will be more productive.  It’s a guideline, but there is a specific point in that plan that will make all your wildest dreams come true.

Second: Block off Some Time

I like to do this on Wednesdays because it’s the middle of the week and things are flowing through my mind.  But any day will work as long as you make it a regular pattern and make sure you do it every single week.  That block of time should be set aside to dream, meditate, and create.

During this block of time you eliminate all the distractions.  There’s no TV around, there is no checking your email.  Your phone is muted so no text messages or phone calls will come through.  You don’t have the internet handy, so social media temptations are out.  What you do have is a pen, a notebook, and coffee, beer, tea, pop, water, or anything you want to munch on or sip.

Get more done

For the next 1 to 3 hours, you ponder things.  You think about your business, you think about your goals, you write down you concerns and your dreams.  You brainstorm solutions to problems (your own, your business’s, or society’s).  You determine if it’s feasible to implement those solutions.  You doodle.  You sketch.  You come up with the wildest idea you can think of, then bring it down to earth.  You make an action plan.  You reflect.  You are thankful.  You consider people that you need to thank.  You consider people that you need to forgive.  You pray.  You marvel and you wonder.  There are no rules to your thinking during this time, but it is time for you to be alone with your thoughts and eliminate the outside distractions.

During this time you will get more done than if you are busy dialing the phone.  You will get more done than if you are busy writing emails, blogging, texting, or tweeting.  You will get more done than the rest of the week because you are changing one area:

You are thinking instead of letting someone else, or something else, think for you.
