Podcasts and Journals are Great Starting Points

So many people believe they don’t have what it takes to write a book.  They think, “oh I’m boring.” Or, “Oh, I couldn’t possibly have enough information to fill a book!”  When the truth is they have so much knowledge, experience, and expertise, they could fill many books.  Dozens of them!

The best part is that most of that hard work of coming up with the stories is already done for them.

Using Podcasts and Journals to Write Your Book

There’s one thing that has to be addressed though.  You can’t just take your podcast transcription and slap it between two covers and call it a book.  That book is going to really suck.  You can’t just type out your journal entries and hope they turn into a great book.  They won’t.  These podcasts, journal entries, blogs, or other content that you’ve pumped out over the years are your starting points.  They’re the foundation and building blocks.

To really make a good book – one that people will want to read – you have to repurpose those into book form.  We speak differently than we write.  We journal differently than we would write for a formal book.  Streams of consciousness are great, but books written in that manner are often very scattered.

Instead, use those journals, podcasts, and the like as your building blocks.  Use them to remember the stories and concepts, then re-write them to expand them into something that flows well, is cohesive, and ultimately will impress the reader.
