The perfect rural getaway can be just the thing you need to recharge those exhausted batteries and disconnect from a world that shouts for your attention for every second of every day! So, how can you make sure you have a great time? From researching the scenery, to planning to take your adorable pets, here are some suggestions for getting the most from it.

Don't Forget About the Vehicle
First things first, you will probably need to check the old iron horse. Your car may need some adjustments if you are taking it on a rural adventure. From steep hills to muddy fields, the family hatchback may not get the job done. If you need to, consider renting a vehicle with 4-wheel drive or something with a little more power. A truck with Super Swamper tires will make it easy to work in the most demanding terrain, riding easily through anything nature can throw at you!
Plan the Rural Getaway Around Landscapes
Everyone has a different idea of what they want from an escape. In the US alone, around 50 million people go camping each year, which is a great way to see magnificent views, including the stars. However, there are some other things to consider for a great vacay:
- For a special experience, find areas with hills, scenic views, forests, lakes, and coasts.
- It can be more relaxing to find secluded and quiet areas away from towns and traffic.
- Places with small-town charm can be a far cry from the larger cities you are used to.
The surroundings are critical when getting away, and some are great for amateur or pro photography. However, you may just want to reduce personal stress by getting away from the hustle and bustle of the city, making seclusion and small towns the perfect vacation experience.
Carefully Consider the Accommodation
Where you stay can make or break your adventure. Some people love creature comforts, and others are just as happy in a backpacking tent. Of course, any accommodation must be safe, and not all are made equally. From Airbnb to 5-star hotels, always check the facilities. Think about personal needs, family needs, and security. For honest information, read customer reviews to get a good idea of what the accommodation is really like before you book your next vacation.
Research Local Food and Drink
Getting to try new food and drink experiences is one of the best reasons to travel. Even different parts of the same country can be dramatically different when it comes to cuisine. Before you set out, ensure the place you plan to visit has the eateries you need. Local family restaurants, cafes, and even grocery stores are essential for any trip to places a little off the beaten track. Smaller towns may not stay open as late, so check the opening times when planning activities.
The Rural Getaway Relies on Activities
Further to activities, these are what make your next adventure fun. A road trip to a rural location doesn’t mean there is nothing to do. In fact, the opposite is true if you are open to new things.
Hiking, walking and cycling
There’s no shortage of places to stretch your city-cramped legs when going out into the open. Rural locations are full of nature trails for hiking, walking, and cycling alone or as a family.
Watching the local wildlife
Sick of staring at pigeons and rats in the city? Rural locations offer a stunning array of wildlife that you won’t see anywhere else. These make magical memories and better photographs!
Water and wet activities
Getting out into the open doesn’t always mean forests and trails. Coastal locations, lake areas, and seaside towns offer many activities to try on the water, on boats, and even through rapids.
Find Ways to Disconnect and Relax
It’s pretty much all about relaxation when getting out and about to a far-flung place. The digital detox alone can be refreshing, so take your face out of the screen and look up! Some alone time in a secluded location is the perfect scenario for finally getting around to reading that book you have tried to start a hundred times. Of course, there are tons of natural things to consider when in rural places, such as wildlife spotting, bug-hunting, and enjoying the clear, starry skies.
Go During the Right Season
Visiting a beautiful location can be expensive. However, you can save money by booking a trip off-peak and out-of-season. In fact, the savings on accommodation can be huge. However, there are some things to consider. Not all activities and shopping experiences might be available. Yet, this can mean a more relaxing vacation. Of course, there are also weather issues to watch out for. Late fall, winter, and early spring can be hazardous, wet, and pretty windy.
Enjoy the Rural Getaway for Pets
All over the world, people adore their pets, and some do everything with them. In fact, a UK newspaper ran a poll and found that 70% of Brits take their dogs on vacation (I suspect it’s similar for the US pet owners). If that’s you, then ensure your vacation is perfect for taking your furry little friends, too, and consider these:
- Check if the accommodation allows pets, or you could face a fine for any damage.
- Ensure there is lots of space to allow the pets to run around and get some exercise.
- Be aware that some rural areas have livestock roaming, so be sure to secure your pets.
The last thing you want is to end up with a penalty for pets damaging stuff. Of course, it is their holiday, too, and dogs especially can benefit much in the same way as people. However, there could be sheep or other livestock around, so keep the dogs secure if they are aggressive.
Plan Around Your Budget
Like anything, it is a major benefit to plan a trip with a budget. Some rural locations are more expensive than people anticipate. Many local shopkeepers and activity providers don’t have access to larger buying power and have to charge more to compete. It can help you take some of what you need with you, such as food essentials. However, activities can add up. There may be some promo deals, but calculate how much you will need to do the things you want to.
Using the right vehicle will help you get through a rural getaway much more easily. Of course, the real reason is the cool activities you get to do, such as hiking and watching wildlife. To ensure you have a great time, plan activities according to how much you can reasonably afford.
