A Blog Post Series Has Lots of Benefits
Often, when we update our blogs, we do one-off articles. That is, these things can stand alone without other blogs to support them. However, there are numerous reasons to write a blog posts series; or even a bunch of them. However, let’s get this thing kicked off with how to do it, then we’ll dip into the benefits that you can see from doing this. As a copywriter, blogger, and ghostwriter, these are the things I take into consideration – if you need amazing content for your site, book, magazine, then let’s chat!
How to Write a Blog Post Series
When you have a topic or concept that is big, you want to break it down into bite-sized chunks. Something that people are going to easily consume, gather the takeaways, and not get overwhelmed. While you can dump everything into one big giant post, you get a bigger and better bang for your buck by doing a series.
Now that you have your topic and, let’s say 4 supporting ideas, we’ll break this down.
For your overall topic, create a Pillar Post. This isn’t in your regular blog section where it will get pushed down the list the more blogs you post. This is a standalone page on your website that you want to draw people in. This Pillar Post is your anchor for your series. Ideally this is relatively long, perhaps 2,500 to 5,000 words (depending on how many supporting ideas you have), that gives a touch on each of the ideas. You lay out the concept, the importance, and then a couple of paragraphs in the support areas.
Each post in your blog post series is now an expansion of the Pillar Post. These blog clusters all link back to each other and to the Pillar creating a network of interlinking on your website.
You can write all of the series at once, then link to each of them, or drop them in at regular intervals. Every time something new is written, you want to update the Pillar Post with something that says, “Read all about XYZ Topic” and link over to that blog post that supports your introduction in the Pillar Post.
At the end of each blog, link to the previous post in the series (as well as the Pillar), to encourage people to go back and read what they may have missed.
If that sounds incredibly unclear, just check out the How to Write a Book Pillar and see how it’s linked to the cluster posts that make up my series.
Considerations When Writing the Series
A few points real quick before we talk benefits. Things you want to consider and incorporate into your blog post series:
- Keep it topical, don’t create a series for the sake of creating a series
- Put your main point as the SEO of your Pillar, supporting but relatable points as the SEO of your series
- Tease people in with your Pillar, the goal is to get them to read the cluster posts
- Hire this out to a professional writer who can make this a nice tidy package
Things you want to avoid:
- Writing lots of words just because you want to hit a word count
- Filling your content with jargon that confuses readers
- Inconsistent posting, if you don’t upload the entire series at once, or you’re inconsistent, people will stop checking
- The Noid
Benefits of a Blog Post Series
If you’ve made it this far you probably realize the benefits of your series. If you’re regularly publishing a blog, you also know. However, for those who don’t, no judgment, I’ve got your back.
SEO Perks – More content on your site with highly targeted keywords means you get a bit of SEO juice every time you post a Pillar and Cluster blog series.
Traffic Perks – More SEO visibility means more people coming to your website.
Internal Linking – Our search engine overlords love to see a site that’s very well connected and easy to navigate.
Time on Site – Because someone is likely landing on your Pillar, then clicking through to the supporting blog posts, you get people sticking around longer and building that trust with them.
And, of course, if you’re using your blog as a big promo piece for your business, you can easily wrap up with a call to action that encourages readers to buy from you. Something like…
Let’s Work Together
Writing is a lot of work and it takes a lot of time. If you’re not doing this professionally (and by that, I mean you’re running a business and carving time out of your day to try to update the blog on top of your daily duties), then it’s likely going to get pushed way low on the priority list.
Don’t let that happen!
