Writing a Book is More than Just Typing Out Your Thoughts

If you want to write a book, you can certainly sit down at the computer and start to type out your thoughts.  Pound away on that keyboard, get those thoughts down, and then publish the sucker!  Well, it’s a little bit more complicated than that.  A mistake new authors will regularly make is skipping the initial planning steps and trying to jump right into the writing aspect.

Take a look at this short video to see what I’m talking about.

What are the Steps to Writing a Book?

Long before you start typing, there are three things you need to do so you can ensure your book is going to go over well.

  • Make a plan for the book. Who do you want to read it?  What is the goal of the book?  What actions do you want them to take after they are done reading?  Most of us aren’t massively successful fiction authors who just want to entertain.  Instead, we have to develop this overall plan and intent before writing the book.
  • Plan your structure. This goes along with the next point.  Before you start pounding out your story and weaving in your expertise, you need to plan the structure of the book.  You have to organize it so one section flows right into the next.  Think of this sort of as an outline for your outline.
  • Determine an outline. Your outline can change, be modified, or added to.  But you certainly need to have an outline.  This will help you see the natural flow of the book, ensure you don’t “forget” to include something, and it will help make sure you put the information in the right place in the book.

Setting the stage properly means that when it comes time to write, you’re not confusing yourself, repeating yourself, or telling the wrong message.
