Success Begins in the Heart

Most of us want to be successful.  I have yet to talk to anyone that said, “I woke up one day and decided to fail.” Or a new high school graduate that said, “My goal in life is to be as mediocre as possible.”  No, we want to be successful, we want to soar and do better than anyone imagined.

Yet many won’t.  Many will end up in the doldrums of life and have achieved that mediocrity that nobody wanted.  They will go to a job they don’t like, to a home without love, drive a car they can’t afford, and overall not be happy with what they have.

Fortunately, the secret to success and happiness is far easier than most imagine.  It’s not a long self-help book that will get you there.  It consists of five simple words.

be wildly successful by delighting in the Lord

“Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:4 ESV

Delight Yourself in the Lord

Earlier this year I wrote about how you can get everything that you want.  Last year I talked about how to experience ultimate fulfillment.  I even discussed the secret to being happy.  This concept is similar, but slightly different.

Surface desires are easy to take care of.  I want French fries, so I go get them.  I want to see a new movie, so I go see it.  I want to buy a fancy car, so I save up my money and I go buy it.  Those desires are generally tangible and you can develop goals to reach them.

Ongoing desires require a bit more work.  Safety, comfort, and love for my family require that I do what I need to do every day.  As long as I’m diligent, that goal (should) be met.  For instance, I want my son to be well rounded, so I make sure he’s enrolled in a great preschool.

Desires of the heart are the easiest to accomplish.  But they will likely take the longest to get there.  Being persuasive and influential is going to mean that I have to fill my mind with so many good and pure thoughts that every time I speak people want to listen.  It means that I have to focus myself on God, and delight in the Lord, so that everything within me is focused on him.  What you put in, is what you will get out.

Focus on Where You Need to Grow

Your heart has desires.  And deep down you know what they are even if you have trouble putting them into words.  In order to get to a point where you’re wildly successful (and we’re not talking rich here, but your dreams and desires are fulfilled), then you need to focus on one thing: delighting in the Lord.

It’s easy, it’s simple… but it takes so much work.
