It Just Takes the Right Attitude

There are a lot of people out there that are stuck in jobs they don’t like.  Every now and then I talk with them and they rant about how terrible their work is.  I encourage them to plan out a business and to branch off on their own if they’re that miserable.  Often I’m met with the same answer: “I could never run a business.”

You can run a business

“I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13

The reality is that anyone can run a business.  It’s a lot of work, yes.  But it’s also very rewarding, and you get to see it grow as much as you want it to.  You are in full control, and there are a few mindsets that you have to maintain to know that your business will succeed.

Truth 1: You Can Run a Business

Humans are capable of doing amazing things.  There are plenty of videos out there that show incredible feats of athletics, but even beyond what we are athletically capable of, we are incredible.

Look back just 100 years.  There were barely cars around, and they certainly couldn’t travel very fast.  There weren’t airplanes as we know it.  In fact, during the First World War (which ended in 1918) horses were still widely used during combat.  In that short span of time we have developed automobiles, airplanes, spaceships, and much more.  Now, we have computers that fit into our pockets giving us access to the world’s information anywhere we want.

You can run a business because even during those hard parts where you feel like you’re going to fall flat on your face, God will strengthen you.  It’s His promise to you in Philippians 4:13.  You just have to claim it and ask for that strength when you’re feeling defeated.

But you have to remember the second truth.

Truth 2: It’s not Your Business

When describing what you do, you will no doubt explain it as, “I have a business…” or “My company…”  There’s nothing wrong with that; it would be awkward and time consuming to really get down to why you believe your business isn’t really your business.  But it comes down to why you have the business in the first place.

God gave you the strength you needed to start it, so it’s only fair to give the business back to Him.  In Proverbs 16:3 we see that we should, “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.”  It’s part of what I wrote about recently in excelling in the workplace.

If we give our business back to God, it takes off a huge amount of pressure.  Sure, we will continue to work hard and want the business to grow and to succeed.  But if it doesn’t, it’s not because of anything that we did.  It’s because God had a different direction in mind for us.

The best part is that if we pay attention to the third truth, we get everything that we want.

Run the good race, commit your work to God

Truth 3: Get What You Want

Wouldn’t it be great to have a magic genie?  Anything that you want you just ask for it and, poof, there it is?  It’s a bit of a stretch, but it’s fun to think that I could wish for a brand new Maserati and go find one in the garage.  In reality, however, it’s even easier than finding a magic lamp.

The book of Psalm tells us in chapter 37 verse 4, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”  It sounds like a carte blanche to get the desires of our heart!  There are ways to get everything that you want.  But many people skip by the first part, and only pay attention to the second.

First, we delight ourselves in the Lord.  Only then do we get what our hearts’ desire.  Because if we are truly delighting in the Lord, then our hearts will desire exactly what he wants and they will desire him.  So it isn’t a conflict to give us what we want, because we are in tune with what He wants.

God wants you to succeed.  Put your heart in the right place, work hard for His company, and he will give you the strength to run the business.

Truth 4: Experience Good Success

Finally, we don’t want to be running a struggling startup forever.  Especially those of us that have boot strapped our business.  The idea is to put in minimal funding and maximum effort in order to surge to profitability.  We can do just that.

We have to follow the first three truths, and cling to the promise found in Joshua chapter 1.  There we are told that if we meditated on God’s word, and keep him the priority in our life, then we will have good success.

How You Should Run Your Business

God has given you amazing talents.  Many of us suppress them after years of not surging to success with minimum effort.  But like all things, in order to do amazing things, you have to practice hard and long.  Those videos of people doing flips off buildings weren’t taken on their first attempt at doing a flip.  That’s after years of practice.  A business that is highly successful isn’t because of luck or an innate sense of business; they’re successful because of years of hard work.

Keep God in the right position in your life, and you will find the strength to run your business, you will get the desires of your heart, and you will experience good success.

As I run my content writing company in Billings, I have to remind myself of these things daily to ensure that I’m working hard as a writer on his business; not for my own glory.
